How to Get a custom URL for YouTube channel

You can give fans an easy-to-remember web address to get to your YouTube channel using a custom URL (likeyoutube.com/creatoracademy). Choose from URL options based on things like your display name, your YouTube username, any current vanity URLs that you have, or the name of your linked website.
Important: You can't change your custom URL after you create it.

Eligibility requirements

To get a custom URL for your channel, your account needs to meet these requirements:
  • Have 100 or more subscribers
  • Be at least 30 days old
  • Have an uploaded photo as channel icon
  • Have uploaded channel art
You can also qualify for a custom URL that aligns with your web domain by linking and verifying your official webpage with your connected Google+ page

Set up a custom URL for your channel

If you're qualified for a custom URL, you'll see a notice in your advanced account settings, receive an email notification, and may see a notification in your Creator Studio dashboard.
To get your custom URL, follow these steps:
  1. Sign in to YouTube and go to your advanced account settings.
  2. Under "Channel settings," select the link to claim your custom URL.
  3. In the "Get a custom URL" box, you'll see the custom URL(s) you've been approved for. You can't change these, but you may need to add a few letters or numbers to make the URL unique to you.
  4. Select the box next to "I agree to the Terms of Service," then click Change URL.
  5. Keep in mind that the custom URL will be linked to both your YouTube channel and your Google+ identity. Once your URL has been approved, you can't request to change it. When you're sure this is the URL you want, clickConfirm choice.
Once selected, your audience can reach your channel by going to to either youtube.com/c/creatoracademy oryoutube.com/creatoracademy (note that we are using the Creator Academy channel as an example here, your URL will be unique to your channel). Both URLs will redirect to your channel homepage.

Change capitalization or accents of your custom URL

If you want to change the capitalization, accents, or diacritics of your custom URL, follow these steps:
  1. Sign in to Google+.
  2. In the top left corner, click the profile icon and go to the page or profile associated with your YouTube channel.
  3. Click the About tab.
  4. On the "Links" card, click Edit.
  5. Make edits to the URL's formatting, then click Save.
Keep in mind that you can only change the capitalization and diacritics of the URL, not the URL itself.

Top 10 tips to creating engaging posts for your blog

Create great Page posts to increase engagement and improve your chances of being shown in News Feed.

1. Use link posts to drive people to your website

Link posts now have a larger, clickable area that helps drive people to your website.

In your Page's sharing tool, enter the offsite URL, then hit Enter.

The title, description and image are taken from your URL, but you can still customise the text and image of the post.

We have increased the size of the image for these types of posts, so ensure you select compelling imagery that will blend into the News Feed experience.

2. Use engaging copy, images and videos

Rich media like photos and videos get more attention and help your message stand out in News Feed

Lifestyle images like the ones you see from your friends on Facebook are always engaging. Try sharing images of your products or photos of your customers enjoying your services

Try to keep your posts between 100 and 250 characters to get more engagement. Shorter, succinct posts are better received

3. Create a two-way conversation

Ask your audience to share their thoughts and feedback on your product and services. This is another way to listen to your customers and improve your business.

Posting content that shows you took their feedback into consideration can build customer loyalty and show you value their ideas

In Action: Modify Watches, a company that creates mix-and-match watches, asks customers for input on product designs and names, and builds ongoing watch designs from this real-time feedback

4. Share exclusive discounts and promotions

Offer special deals or perks to your customers to keep them interested and to drive online sales. Include call to actions with links to the most relevant page on your website.

In Action: BarkBox creates posts with promotional codes. They found that valuable offers like buy-1-get-1-free or discounts over 20% were more likely to be shared and it helped them spread the word about their business.

To improve engagement with your promotions, include clear calls to action, redemption details, and when the promotion ends to add a sense of urgency.

5. Provide access to exclusive information

Reward people who are connected to your Page and drive loyalty and online sales by providing them with exclusive information. Make them feel special by sharing exclusive product news, contests and events.

In action: PhotoBarn created a Mother’s Day 10-Day Giveaway of PhotoBarn products on their Page.

6. Be timely

Your audience will be more likely to engage with posts when they’re related to subjects that are top of mind, like current events or the holidays

Timeliness is also important when replying to comments on your posts. The faster you reply, the more likely fans will engage with you in the future.

Tip: Post a daily sneak peek of upcoming product sales 2 weeks prior to Black Friday or Cyber Monday

7. Plan your conversational calendar

The easiest way to stay in regular contact with fans is by creating a conversational calendar with ideas about what to talk about each week or month

A content calendar will not only help you post regularly, but will ensure your content is well planned, interesting, and that you don't miss major business events and news. Find a frequency that works for you and your audience.

8. Schedule your posts

To better manage your time, you can schedule your posts in advance and plan for upcoming holiday events and specials

To schedule your posts, simply click the clock icon on the lower left-hand corner of your Page's sharing tool

Schedule your posts when most of your fans are online. You can find out when your fans are online by visiting your Page Insights and going to the posts tab

After you've scheduled a post, you can manage your scheduled posts by going to the top of your Page and choosing Edit Page and then selecting Use Activity Log

9. Target your posts

If your posts are meant for specific groups of people, you can target your post in your Page’s sharing tool by clicking on the target icon at the bottom left corner and selecting Add Targeting. You can target your post based upon gender, relationship status, educational status, interests, age, location, and language.

10. Review the performance of your posts

Check your Page Insights regularly to understand what's working to keep your posts relevant and engaging. Page Insights will help you understand your audience and what types of content interests them.

WHAT IS LINK BUILDING?

Link Building

Link building (a.k.a. Link Development) is the process of gaining high-quality inbound links pointing to your website. This is an important practice because search engines use link popularity -- the measure of the quality and quantity of links pointing to a site -- as a crucial external factor in ranking. Generally the more links a website has pointing towards it, the better the link popularity and the rankings will be. However, not all links are equal. Some links are considered better quality than others and therefore have a higher value.
For example, to indentify quality links and determine an individual page’s value, Google uses an algorithm called PageRank. Along with analyzing the number of links to a website, PageRank also considers the quality of the page that links to a website. To learn more about PageRank, please visit http://www.prcheckingtool.com/pagerank.php.
Some effective link building strategies include article writing and submissions, blog writing, social bookmarking, social media profile creations, and link baiting.
From 1995 to as late as 2010, "Link Exchange" was the primary way to acquire links. In the late 2000's, however, fewer and fewer people were participating in Link Exchange because Google did not give it a high value. In 2011, Submit Express officially stopped providing Link Exchange services and announced the death of Link Exchange in this article: RIP Link Exchange.
A much better and newer practice of acquiring links is "Link baiting." Link Baiting is the practice of giving away something (such as a product, service, ebook or report) in order to generate media attention and links. In return, many people may discuss your brand or product via online blogs, social media sites and forums. Link Baiting requires special planning and most often you may need to spend a decent amount of money. A good example of Link Baiting is when GourmetGiftBaskets.com broke the record for the world's largest coffee at a trade show.

Top 5 Simple Strategies To Improve Your Blog’s Search Rankings

Is blogging a major component of your digital marketing strategy?

Whether you’re a B2B or B2C marketer, there is ample opportunity to boost your search engine rankings through blogging. However, you can’t implement a short-term approach to build a long-term source of organic traffic.
When you’re doing SEO, you need to be cautious. Some of the strategies that worked in the past will now get you penalized. On the contrary, some strategies that formerly weren’t worth your time are now essential.
If you want to build a sustainable web presence, then you need to adapt to the changes of Google’s algorithm. Whether you see these modifications or not, they are happening.
As you continue to align your content to the updated algorithm, you’ll gradually generate organic traffic. But more importantly, you’ll be able to attract prospects that could potentially become loyal customers.
Popular avenues for generating traffic to a business’s website include blogging, SEO, social media and email marketing. Many of these can (and, I would suggest, should) be used in conjunction with one another.
For example, blogging accounts for a large portion of traffic for businesses — and if you continue to create relevant, high-quality content, it will increase your rankings in the search engines, especially if you optimize your posts and promote them via social channels and email.
Today, I will share five tips that you can use to build a reliable source of organic traffic to your blog site:

1. Stop Focusing Solely On Keywords

Over the past few years, Google has made a concerted effort to value the overall experience of its users, which was all the more evident when it rolled out Hummingbird, a smarter search algorithm that looks at keywords in context. Their goal is to move away from seeing search queries as strings of keywords and towards understanding them as meaningful concepts.
A result of this is that Google now places greater emphasis on the value of your content than on the specific keywords it contains.
Does this mean that you shouldn’t optimize your content for keywords? No. The search engine still relies on keywords to some extent to understand the relevance of your content, but it’s gotten better at understanding context and detecting spammy, thin content — meaning that the days of achieving strong rankings simply by placing the main keyword in the title of your blog and repeating it over and over again throughout the content are over.
The key is to focus on creating quality content that provides useful information to your audience. If you want to rank number one for a keyword, then create content that deserves to be ranked number one. Stop looking for the shortcut in SEO. This mindset will do nothing but impede your visibility in the search engines.

2. Share Your Content On Social Media

More than two million blogs are posted each day. If you want to rank high in the search engines, then you need to get your content out into cyberspace. One of the best ways to do this is by building your brand visibility through social media.
Start sharing your blog posts on Facebook, Twitter and Google Plus. Create a social media regimen that holds you accountable each week. The more places your website is featured, the more data Google with gather on it.
Your social media fans are probably not ready to purchase your products. Unlike search engine users, they aren’t looking for an immediate solution to their problem. However, they are always interested in rich content related to the topics that matter to them and the problems they are trying to solve.
Creating thoughtful, useful content will ultimately improve the user experience of your fans. As you continue to provide value, they will start visiting your web properties. This will increase the level of engagement on your social media channels, in addition to your organic reach. It also can’t hurt that you’re potentially getting backlinks to your useful content pages.
Building a social media presence will enhance your brand’s visibility. Is there a concrete method to measure the SEO impact of social media? Considering Google hasn’t explicitly addressed this issue, I can’t say for sure.
What I can say is that in my experience, when you distribute your content through a myriad of social platforms, you’ll generally notice more links. The social media dynamic is similar to a “cocktail party.” Always lead with value, and don’t try to pitch your fans repeatedly.

3. Quality Versus Quantity Links

The more links to your website, the better, right?
Not anymore.
Links are still a determining factor in the search engine rankings. However, the days of creating thin content and “link blasting” are over.
Buying backlinks is fast, simple and relatively cheap, and there are many SEO agencies that can provide hundreds of links to your website. But proceed with caution, because this practice could lead to a penalty (and potentially ruin your brand) if the following applies:
  • You receive a large volume of links in a short time frame.
  • The links aren’t relevant to the theme of your website.
  • The linking websites have a low Domain Authority.
These days, the quality of your inbound links is what matters most. The link-building mindset change from “quantity” to “quality” can largely be attributed to Google’s web spam algorithm, Penguin, which was introduced in 2012 and was aimed at websites buying links (bad or good) strictly to boost their Google rankings.
Nowadays, any SEO impact that you get from link building is predicated on the idea that these links provide real value to users who might come across them.

4. Promote Your Content To “Earn” Links

Most novice marketers buy into this erroneous notion of “if you build it, they will come.” Unfortunately, this is seldom the case. If you want to enhance your brand awareness, then you need to heavily promote your content.
If you don’t have an inbound marketing strategy that will help you “earn” links, then it will be difficult to build a sustainable source of organic traffic. My first piece of advice is to figure out who your audience is (through polls, surveys and cold calls) and what problems or needs those prospects are looking to solve or fulfill.
Your content should directly address these needs, and you should create a social media content promotion regimen that gets your content out in front of your audience on a regular basis (which social media avenues you use will also depend on your audience).
You might be asking, What are “earned” links?
They reflect the value that you deliver to your market. For instance, if you get a backlink to your website from guest posting on another site, that’s technically not an “earned” link. It’s a result of your time and effort. But when another credible source in your niche links to your website, then you have “earned” a link.
This idea of pursuing earned links has essentially forced marketers to step up their game. If you aren’t creating useful content, then don’t expect anyone to link to it.
There are no shortcut strategies to increase the number of earned links to your website. The best advice is to focus on creating thoughtful, useful content that meets the objectives of your audience.

5. Optimize Your Website For Mobile

The technology trends in our society have diversified your target audience. Your customers are no longer all sitting at their desk behind a personal computer to access the web.
Mobile has essentially taken over. Google has adapted to the behavior of its users, and therefore, so should you. The “Mobile Friendly Update” went into effect on April 21, 2015, which essentially leveled the playing field between mobile and PC users.
Google has stated that the majority of monthly searches in 10 countries (including the US) have come from mobile devices.
Here are three tips that you can use to optimize your website for mobile users:
  • Layout. Ensure that your pages, menus and posts are optimized for mobile.
  • Behaviors. Your landing pages and sales pages might require different strategies on mobile. Tools such as Crazy Egg will help assess the behaviors of mobile and desktop users.
  • Content. Is there a disparity in the content that mobile and desktop users want? Determine what format is generating the most traction with mobile visitors to your website.
